Popular Osborne Road bar Jam Jar hit by early-morning fire

A popular Jesmond bar and hotel were hit by fire on Saturday morning.

Firefighters were called to the Jam Jar bar and New George Hotel, on Osborne Road, at 7.22am, a spokesperson for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service (TWFRS) said.

Three appliances were sent to the scene, two of which had left by around 10am, while one engine remained in place, manned by a relief crew who had come to take over from those first sent to Osborne Road.

A spokesperson for the New George Hotel told ChronicleLive: "Everything is fine, it was just a small fire."

He did not confirm whether there had been any guests in the hotel at the time, however, the TWFRS spokesperson said nobody had been put at any immediate danger from the fire.

The appearance of three fire engines on the busy Jesmond Road caused some confusion among locals, most of whom said they had not seen the fire itself, and the first they'd known of it was when they heard the sirens or saw the flashing lights of the fire engines.

Staff in the nearby Waitrose noticed the fire engines arrive shortly after they started their shift at 7am, while a group of guests at the next door Carlton Hotel had had no idea anything had happened until they left for the morning.

One said: "We don't know what happened, we didn't hear anything - we had no idea anything had happened until we came outside just now."
