Popular Nottingham venue announces plan to re-open as a community pub

Pubs fans have voiced their delight as plans were announced to launch a new community pub in Nottingham. The owners and interior of The Hole in the Wall, in North Sherwood Street, are changing and there will be a new focus for the 1930s art deco building.

The announcement was made on Facebook by owners Drew Grimshaw and Chris Robertson, who are gearing up for an April 1st launch date. They also answered questions from the community about what they can expect from the new pub including whether or not the space will be dog-friendly or have wheelchair access.

They wrote: "Just wanted to let you all know The Hole in the Wall on North Sherwood Street is reopening on 1st April 2022 - and no that is not an April Fool’s joke! New management, new look, new vibe!" The bar will be a gay-owned and safe space for the community, but anyone will be welcome.

They also wrote that the bar will be a space where the community will be able to spend time in a welcoming and safe environment. Workers were on site on Thursday, March 24, preparing for the launch day.

The original pub that stood on that site dated from 1860 and was rumoured to have a capacity of just eleven people. The bar was also an Irish bar for a brief period in the 1990s and was popular with Nottingham Trent University students who lived in the halls nearby.

The bar also has living quarter upstairs with three bedrooms, a lounge, kitchen and bathroom with additional accommodation on the second floor with four more rooms. It has an external entrance to the bar.

Although workers have been on site, there have not been any posts or hints about what the refurb will look like. Prior to this, the bar had a large open plan area with a single bar to the right of the entrance.

It also had a pool table and darts with a music theme. There is a small enclosed snug area tucked away behind the entrance.

The announcement comes just days after the announcement that Debbie Law from New Forresters will be retiring and placing the bar up for sale. It is hoped the bar will remain LGBT+ after it was awarded a pink plaque for being the longest-running gay bar in the UK.
