Popular Mumbles cafe bar Cakes and Ale is expanding - with Fish Cakes and Ale

A new premium Fish and Chip shop will soon open it's doors in Mumbles - delivered by Cakes and Ale.

Fish Cakes and Ale is a new start up offering "something new" in the promenade with premium quality fish, fish cakes and chips, expected to open in the first week of April.

The new venture comes as part of the business's plans to "remodel, reinvent and adjust in order to survive" following incredible difficulty through the pandemic.

Based in 14 Newton Road, it will replace the old Greggs bakery and is only a few footsteps away from it's popular sister restaurant, Cakes and Ale.

The takeaway is said to be days away from completion with heavy investments in equipment to produce "premium quality food just a few steps away from the promenade".

It comes after popular restaurant, Cakes and Ale, acknowledged the industry had taken a "bashing" over the past few years.

Owner Laurence Winmill had previously lobbied Swansea councillors to enable outdoor seating space following difficulty surviving.

"We've had to look at other ways for enterprise, it was clear during Covid that takeaways were almost resilient when compared to traditional businesses that had to close due to restrictions," he said

"It was during Covid that we started looking at other things we could do to get us through and survive and that's where the takeaway concept came from. We spent the last year doing our research and sourcing the appropriate outlet, we're able to share our expertise and resource we've established in Cakes and Ale."

With the new premises being not far from the old, customers will be able to use a designated app to order goods from the takeaway to enjoy whilst in the comfort of the familiar restaurant.

The licensed premises will also offer beverages alongside its food.

"We've been working on this for over a year, renovation started in September, but even now Covid has delayed our start with supplies and logistics but we're hopeful to be open either the first or second week or April.

"I don't think anybody in hospitality can say they're a commercial success because of what Covid has done. Cakes and Ales has really fought hard to stay open during a very difficult and challenging time"

"Fish Cakes and Ale has been inspired by the quality of what we produced at Cakes and Ale but it is more down to the fact that we wanted to look at other ways where we could develop the brand but become more Covid resistant and tap into a market down in Mumbles where people want good quality takeaway food" he said.
