Popular Manchester nightclub The Birdcage - known for its cabaret nights - closes suddenly after 13 years

Manchester nightclub The Birdcage has closed after 13 years.

The venue was known for its Showtime cabaret nights on Saturdays, featuring flamboyant drag acts and dancers.

It had become a popular hen party destination since opening in 2006 and also hosted a student night every Friday.

A member of the venue's marketing team confirmed to the M.E.N. that the bar had closed but declined to disclose any more details of the circumstances or how many staff have been affected.

Emails have been sent to customers cancelling bookings and promising refunds on any deposits that have been paid.

The club was based inside Manchester Arndale, opposite The Printworks, on Withy Grove, where it underwent a £400,000 refurbishment two years ago.

Staff had been planning its 13th anniversary celebrations in June.

The M.E.N. has contacted Manchester Arndale for a comment.

We'd love to hear your memories of nights out at The Birdcage over the years. You can leave a comment below, tweet us @CityLifeManc or join in the conversation on Facebook .
