Popular Irish councillor Oliver Tully will be laid to rest on Saturday after he suddenly passed away last night.

The father of four, who was a representative in Drogheda area of Co Louth since 1991, has been described as a "huge loss" to the local community.

The Fine Gael man, who was also a secondary school teacher for 37 years, was appointed as Leas-Cathaoirleach of the council after the local elections in May.

A death notice on RIP.ie reads: "Beloved husband to Eileen and loving dad to Philip, Sarah, Amy and Eibhlín.

"Sadly missed by his wife and children, daughter-in-law Maureen, sons-in-law Kelvin, Christoff and David, grandchildren Róisin, Diarmaid, Cathal, Fergal, Tadhg, Hugo, Helen, Katie and David, brother Eugene, sisters Susan, Bernie, Mary, Anne and Elizabeth, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, Eileen's step-mam Margaret, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends."

A wake will be held at Townley’s Funeral Home, Crosslanes from 5pm until 8pm on Thursday and Friday evening.

A Funeral Mass will take place at 11am on Saturday morning in the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Termonfeckin.

Burial will take place afterwards in Holy Cross Cemetery, Shetland Road, Termonfeckin.

Family flowers only, donations, if desired, to Irish Heart Foundation.

Speaking about the late Cllr Tully, Fergus O'Dowd TD told LMFM: "He was a very hardworking, diligent, committed community worker.

"He never looked for the limelight but he always did the work.

"He cared so much about his community, he's a former mayor of Drogheda. It's just really, really sad."
