Popular Lanarkshire headteacher bids farewell to school after 14 years in charge

A Lanarkshire primary school celebrated the career of its long-standing headteacher after he announced his retirement last week.

Francis Farrell spent the last 14 years of his 43-year career as headteacher of St Athanasius’ Primary in Carluke.

He leaves behind a legacy of leadership at the school, which staff say will be difficult to top.

The school held a day of celebration for Mr Farrell, including a red carpet as well as speeches from staff and Francis himself.

New acting Head teacher, Mr Simon Gavin, spoke very highly of his predecessor.

He said: "On behalf of the pupils, parents and staff, we want to wish Mr Farrell every success and happiness in his retirement.

"His enthusiasm and passion for making a difference not only in our school and nursery, but for the wider community of Carluke, is evident in everything he achieved in 14 years.

"I said in my address that our school community without Mr Farrell will be a very different place indeed.

"The outpouring of love and gratitude this week has affirmed the commitment and dedication of Mr Farrell. We will all miss him."
