Popular Lanarkshire elephants sent to specialist contractor for care following vandalism

Westwoodhill’s elephants have been taken into care to nurse them back to full health.

The concrete elephants that normally live in the local play area had been the cause of concern for residents and the council after attacks from vandals.

The popular pachyderms had been badly damaged and temporary Heras fencing had been placed around them to protect them and anyone near them while the work needed to repair them was able to be assessed.

However the fencing had also been damaged, and as a result, the elephants have been taken away and will be cared for by a specialist contractor.

Councillor John Anderson told Lanarkshire Live : “The elephants are a treasured feature of the play area and it was very sad to see the damage done to them, not to mention the potential for injury it posed for children playing around them.

“We had hoped that we would be able to repair them on site but the extent of the damage is so bad that we have had to take them to a place of safety where they can receive some tender care attention.

“They will be repaired by a specialist contractor at our yard at Langlands and, once restored to full health, they will be set back in their natural habitat at Westwoodhill.”
