Popular Kirkcudbright chippy to close for final time on August 29

A Kirkcudbright institution is set to close its doors for the final time later this month.

For nearly 15 years, Robert and Margaret Maxwell have been serving hungry customers delicious fish and chips from Polarbites across the road from Harbour Square.

And there was great sadness when they announced on Facebook that they would be shutting on Sunday, August 29.

Margaret said: “We have been trying to sell for nearly three years and with Covid we’ve just decided it’s time.

“The post on Facebook has been viewed more than 57,000 times and we’ve had lots of lovely messages.

“It has been a great 15 years. People have been so lovely and the staff we have had have all been fabulous.

“Some started with us at school and continued all the way through until they’re finishing college and university. We’re going to have a celebration for the staff and some former staff have asked to come back.

“It’s been fabulous and we have been so lucky.”

Polarbites opened in 2007 so that the family-run business could sell some of the fresh produce available from the Polarpak fish shop next month.

Polarpak will also be closing its doors with its final day of trading in mid-October.
