Popular Kilmarnock florist to close its doors after 25 years

A long-standing face of Kilmarnock’s high street will close its doors on Saturday – after almost a quarter of a century.

Flowers From the Hart on Nelson Street will shut after owner Muriel Hart decided to retire.

Muriel, 74, said the time was right to close the business which she started 24-and-a-half years ago after leaving her former job as a French linguist for BT.

Grandmother Muriel intends to spend her retirement tending to her garden and spending time with her family, but says she will miss the customers who have been loyal to her through the years.

“I will miss the people most of all,” she said.

“Some people know I’m going but many won’t so I just want people to know how much I’ll miss them.

“It’s all been lovely – apart from the really busy times near holidays.”

Muriel added: “I didn’t always think I would be a florist, but I’m creative. I remember right at the start, we came in and this was brand new.

“My husband put up wooden panels because that was the image I wanted to portray after visiting Germany; that’s where I got the inspiration.”
