'Popular' Everton FC steward falls 200ft to his death in mountain climbing tragedy

Tributes have been paid to a popular Everton FC steward and church warden who died in a tragic holiday accident.

Clive Betteridge fell to his death while walking in the mountains on the border of France and Andorra this week.

He reportedly fell 200ft down a stone channel and into a lake while hiking on Tuesday.

The incident happened in French territory but after he was rescued by emergency workers he was flown to hospital in Andorra, where he later died.

The dad was described as an inspiration in a touching message from the vicar at the church where he devoted decades of hard work.

In a heartfelt statement Kate Wharton, vicar at St Bartholomew's in Roby , fondly remembered the 65-year-old and offered condolences to his wife, Jacqui, and daughter, Ruth.

Ms Wharton said: "Along with other members of the church community at St Bart’s Roby I am devastated by the loss of our well-loved church warden Clive Betteridge.

"Clive was one of the mainstays of the church and community having served here for almost 30 years as Sunday School teacher, choir master, in the church band, as part of the gardening team, and as church warden.

"In my time as vicar I have valued his support, kindness and wisdom, his love for Jesus and his inspiration to many on their faith journey.

"He will be much missed and all our thoughts and prayers go out to Jacqui and Ruth and the whole family."

A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesperson said: “We are supporting the family of a British man who died in Andorra and are in touch with the local authorities.”
