Popular wrestler Endo was promoted for the first time to the sanyaku ranks -- the three below yokozuna -- when he was listed as a komusubi for the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament set to start on May 13 at Ryogoku Koku- gikan in Tokyo.
The rankings, announced by the Japan Sumo Association on Monday, placed Endo as the west side komusubi, while Mongolian Ichinojo is back at sekiwake for the first time in 17 tournaments.
Kyokutaisei, a native of Asahikawa, Hokkaido, is the lone newcomer to the top makuuchi division, which will make him the first Hokkaido wrestler to debut in the uppermost division since Tatsuhikari in 1992.
