Popular Edinburgh restaurant becomes fourth in 24 hours to close over Covid case

A popular Edinburgh burger restaurant has become the fourth Capital eatery to close in the last 24 hours due to a positive covid test among staff.

Down the Hatch said they had taken the difficult decision to temporarily shut their Antigua Street eatery after a member of their team returned a positive test for the virus.

The restaurant said the move was “safety first” to allow other staff to be tested and protect customers.

It follows a trio of Edinburgh food outlets to press pause amid a growing number of cases in the city.

Chez Jules, on Hanover Street, shut down until June 16th after a positive test while The Voyage of Buck on William Street took a similar decision on Sunday

Meanwhile, Rollo, on Broughton Street, has also put precautionary measures in place after one member of staff was contacted by NHS track and trace protocols.

Down the Hatch gave no indication of when the restaurant will next open, but said customers would be kept up to date with any developments.

Positing on Instagram, they wrote: “Rubbish news. One of our staff members has tested positive.

“We will be closing to allow all the staff to get tested as well as deep clean the business before we can make the decision to open again.

“Safety first. We will keep you posted.”

Edinburgh recorded 150 new cases of coronavirus on Sunday as the city remains in level two of the Scottish Government’s lockdown tiers.
