Popular Edinburgh Leith Café Mitchell's shuts as owners retire and sail off into the sunset

Rab Mitchell, 72, and his wife Grace, also 72, bought Leith institution Mitchell's cafe 22 years ago in 1998.

On Saturday, the couple said it was a 'sad day' as the café closed its doors one last time.

Now, the hard-working couple plan to spend their retirement in the sun, ticking off their bucket list cruises, by sailing off to glamorous locations such as the Caribbean, Dubai and Mexico with their family.

Rab describes himself as 'Leith born and bred' and says the highlights of running the café has been getting to know all of the friendly 'Leith characters.'

"Everyone knew it as Lannis," Rab told Edinburgh Live. "It was an old Italian ice cream parlour, the guy moved over from Italy and it still has all the old ice cream booths.

"We would have all the old grannies coming in and telling us about their courting days. They would point at the booths and tell us they had their first kiss in here."

Rab and Grace officially closed the café on Saturday by hosting a celebratory farewell breakfast with friends and family.

The couple couldn't believe how much attention a retirement announcement shared by their daughter Debbie Corner received, when it was shared on to local Facebook community, 'I Love Leith.'

The post wrote: "Mitchell's café officially closed yesterday. Rab and Grace would like to thank their loyal Leith customers over the last 22 years."

The announcement received almost 900 likes and 130 comments, with one local writing: "Gutted for you both leaving but happy retirement" and another writing, "Have a great retirement you both deserve it."

Rab and Grace told Edinburgh Live they have been inundated with kind messages and farewell gifts. They would like to thank their customers for 22 years of loyalty.
