Popular Edinburgh furniture shop closes following the death of owner of 48 years

A popular antique and furniture store in Leith is set to close its doors after 48 years in the business due to the sad passing of its owner.

Crawfords, on Leith Walk, has been serving the locals of Edinburgh and the wider population for almost five decades.

George Duff, who ran the shop and became a well appreciated member of the community, sadly passed away in April, with his daughter taking to social media to announce the sad closure of the shop.

She said: "As a family, we would like to take this opportunity to thank the people of Leith, Edinburgh and worldwide who have supported my dads business over the last 48 years.

"I'm sure, like us, there will be many people in Leith who will miss a wander around Crawfords."

The store was a treasure chest for old and unique bits and bobs, selling pretty much everything from ornaments, to musical instruments.

George's daughter, Jacci, said that her dad not only ran the business for 48 years, but he also built the warehouse round the back, being part of the overall building for over 50 years.

He was also a popular antique dealer throughout his time in Leith and was known in the antique business all over Edinburgh.

After surviving the pandemic and the current work being done on Leith Walk to install tram lines, the community will be sad to see a piece of history disappearing.

The bright blue 'Crawford's Furniture Salerooms' sign above the store had blended in to the surrounding area and provided a friendly service to thousands over the years.

The comments on the Facebook post were flooded with tributes to George and individual memories of the store that had lasted decades.

One user wrote: "I popped in often to sell bits to your dad, a friend of my own fathers and a real gentleman. I always enjoyed our little catch-ups and stories."

Another commented: "Still got 'sugar' the rocking horse, and my wardrobe and Ottoman I got from your dad 17 years ago. He'll be missed."

Most of the tributes commented on how they still own bits and pieces that were bought in the shop years ago. One said: "I love this place so much. Got a few great pieces there over the years and great patter from your dad. He will be missed."
