Popular Durham tearoom closes its doors due to Covid-19 restrictions

A popular tearoom in Durham has closed its doors temporarily after a "significant" drop in trade due to coronavirus restrictions.

Tealicious Tearoom on Elvet Bridge in Durham City Centre said it made the "difficult decision" to close temporarily as it was no longer viable to stay open.

However, the tearoom still has an online shop and is now able to deliver food and cakes to customers.

In a statement, the tearoom said: "This has been a very difficult decision to make but I have decided to temporarily close the Tearoom for a few weeks from tonight.

"Since the new restrictions were introduced trade has dropped significantly and it is no longer viable to keep the doors open.

"However, don’t despair, we are down but by no means out! We are going to focus on our online shop adding more items to this and hopefully develop a delivery service.

"Please keep a lookout for our exciting plans over the coming days.

"We are in very strange times but we can’t change this so my advice is drink tea and eat cake, thank you for your continued support. Stay safe everyone. Much love from the Tealicious team."

It's one of a number of businesses and schools across the region to have been affected by the coronavirus pandemic, with 22 schools in Sunderland partially closed currently.
