A popular teacher heard the school bell ring for the last time this week after a whopping four decades in the classroom.
Hazel Hubbert signed off yesterday after 41 years at Dumfries’ Calside Primary.
But retiring Mrs Hubbert won’t struggle to fill the days now she’s not behind her desk - she has already earmarked gardening and travelling as pastimes.
Hazel moved to the Calside Road school after spending a year at Langholm Academy.
But it became a long-term appointment for the young teacher, who spent the rest of her career there.
Hazel told the Standard: “After a year at Langholm, I moved here. I’ve had all the opportunities I wanted here, there’s been a lot of changes of head teachers over the years and the school has changed direction and I’ve enjoyed it here.
“It’s always been a very welcoming, friendly place with lovely children.”
She added: “There’s now lots of second generation pupils here, who say ‘you taught my mum’ or whatever but there haven’t been any yet who’ve said ‘you taught my gran.”
But the new retiree also has destinations already earmarked for travel to take up her free time.
The occasion was marked on Thursday with a surprise presentation from pupils.
