Popular Dublin tourist attraction forced to cancel tours due to anti-social behaviour

Swimmers jumping from the quays into the Liffey are causing disruption to local tourism.

Youths jumping off the famous Jeanie Johnston have created particular problems for owners and tourists alike.

Tours on the famine ship have had to be cancelled until appropriate security measures are implemented, with 120 people receiving refunds over the next three days.

The cancellations have drawn attention to the wider problem of anti-social behaviour on Dublin docklands, a problem that has been going on for many years.

Business owners say that this anti-social behaviour is posing a threat to the local economy.

John O’Neill, manager of Jeanie Johnston Tall Ships told RTÉ News that it was not possible for their tours to operate while young people were jumping off the rigging.

He said: “The disruption that they bring, the danger they’re putting themselves to and the risk that they’re putting out there for our customers means that we can’t continue to operate with the kind of behaviour you’ve seen there.”

Alan Robinson of the Docklands Business Forum believes that this is a recurring issue.

He said: “We’ve been saying that the issue has been getting worse over the last ten years.

“All the businesses and all the employees will tell you that there’s a feeling of more aggressions, more empowerment of those that are committing the crimes.”

The Jeanie Johnston tour typically takes 50 minutes and tells the stories of those who fled the Irish Famine on coffin ships in the hope of finding a better life.
