Popular Dublin pub closes due to new Covid-19 restrictions

A popular Dublin pub has released a heartbreaking statement this evening, announcing that they will have to close their doors.

The owners of O'Neill's pub on Pearse Street are closing up shop until the new restrictions are lifted.

They feel it would not be possible to keep open with the new 8pm closing time.

O'Neill's Pub wished all their customers a Happy Christmas and thanked locals for their support during the past difficult year.

The Pearse Street pub posted: "With a heavy heart we’ve decided to close O’Neills until the 8pm hospitality restrictions are lifted.

"Unfortunately it’s not viable to trade under the new restrictions.

"Thanks to all our valued customers for your support.

"Looking forward to welcoming you back in 2022. Have a happy and healthy festive season.

"From all at O’Neills."

Customers were upset to hear the heartbreaking news and wished staff well.

One person said: "It must be really tough. Take care. You are an amazing pub."

Another said: "Aww devastated for you. Happy Christmas to an amazing pub and staff see you in 2022 for a drink."

All restaurants and bars excluding takeaway and delivery must close at 8pm from tomorrow, 20 December until Sunday, 30 January.

Publicans said the new restrictions are a devastating blow to the industry.

Padraig Cribben, VFI Chief Executive, said: “I guess the Government thinks we should feel grateful for the 8pm closing given NPHET’s demand for a 5pm curfew. The reality is this decision will decimate the trade that was already on its knees.

“Christmas was the one chance we had to recoup some of the losses amassed earlier in the year but we’re now in a situation where staff will lose their jobs and pubs will shut one week before Christmas as they see little point in opening under these conditions.”
