Popular Dublin beach warns swimmers to avoid sea water due to pollution

Swimmers have been warned not to swim at a popular Dublin beach due to water pollution.

Dublin’s Seapoint in the Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown area is currently out of bounds for swimmers as the quality of the water has deteriorated due to suspected impacts from animals and birds in the area.

Swimmers are also advised that there is no diving allowed from the platforms due to sudden large waves caused by car ferries.

An extension to the swimming ban may be put in place as this area is subject to short-term pollution after heavy rainfall over the next few days.

The advisory comes after swimmers were advised to stay away from the water at Seapoint due to high levels of e-coli.

The warning will be in place until Thursday.

A spokesperson for the Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Council said: "An advisory notice has been placed at Seapoint Beach due to elevated levels of e-coli in the water.

"We're advising the public not to swim at Seapoint until 05/08 or until notice is lifted.

"Further testing will take place and updates will be available on our website."

Water Safety Ireland insists that even though open water swimming can be an enjoyable experience people need to have the right safety knowledge and preparation before hopping into the sea.

They warned that there are considerably more dangers with open water swimming.

“If you see someone in difficulty, please dial 112 and ask for the coast guard.”
