Popular dad was found dead at his Imperial Apartments flat

A man died after taking his own life at his flat in South Bristol, an inquest has found.

Mark Leigh was found dead in his apartment in a former office block in Hengrove on January 27. The 38-year-old's inquest opened in mid-February and has now concluded.

Mr Leigh was a maintenance engineer originally from Dublin, in Ireland, and he was found dead at his property in Imperial Apartments. Assistant coroner Debbie Rookes ruled a conclusion of suicide at an inquest on April 25 at the Coroner's Court in Flax Bourton.

The inquest's opening heard that Mr Leigh, who left behind three children, was identified by a security guard inside the building and that the 38-year-old had left notes inside his room. The inquest opening also noted that Mark had last had contact with mental health services at his GP surgery in 2020.

Police attended Mr Leigh's apartment on the day of his death and said that there were no suspicious circumstances. A police spokesperson said at the time: "On Thursday, January 27, officers attended a report of a deceased male at an address in Imperial Apartments, Whitchurch Lane.

"His next of kin have been informed. The death is not being treated as suspicious and enquiries are being conducted on behalf of the coroner."

Thousands of pounds were raised for Mr Leigh's family after his death. Mr Leigh played for Talbot Knowle United AFC from the age of 18 until he was 34, and his former teammates organised fundraising events to cover the costs of his funeral and support his loved ones.

He was described as a talented footballer with an "exemplary" attitude.
