Popular dad-of-two found dead at football club

Tributes have been paid to a father-of-two who has died suddenly.

Darren Phillips, originally from Baglan but who had been living in Cwmafan , was a committee member of Trefelin Boys and Girls Club, where his body was discovered on Wednesday, September 4.

Club members say Mr Phillips, who worked at the Ford plant in Bridgend , was a popular member of the club, who would work on the gate meeting and greeting players on matchday.

Fellow club committee member Rob Robbins said: "Darren was a very, very friendly bloke. He was a character.

“The replies and reactions the club has received on social media say everything you need to know about him.

“When people came to the club to watch football, he was one of the first people they would see. He was friendly with everybody, and always had a smile.

“He would do all sorts of match-day duties; he would work behind the bar, he would help with cleaning up. He was a very hard worker - he would work all the hours that Ford would give him.”

Darren, who also used to practice karate, was also described as a devoted father to his two teenage daughters and a beloved husband of Karen.

Chris ‘Johnsy’ Johns, another Trefelin club member, said: “We all loved him. When he was introduced to the club, the club embraced him.

“He spent all summer doing ground work up the club.

“He was a doting father to his two daughters.

“Last night, we had Penlan football club visit us to pay their respects. It was a sign of respect, and of the football family community.

“Everyone at the club would like to send their condolences to Darren’s family”.

All of Trefelin’s football teams, from junior to its two senior sides, have called off this weekend’s fixtures as a gesture of respect to Mr Phillips and his family.

A spokesman for South Wales Police added: “We were called to reports of sudden death of a 45-year-old man at Ynys Park at 7.30am on September 4.

“The death is not being treated as suspicious and the matter has been referred to the HM Coroner”.
