Popular Costa Coffee store in Co Mayo shut after rat droppings found

A Costa Coffee store was closed after rat droppings were found at the premises last month.

The store in Ballina, Co Mayo, was shut down by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland after an inspector found “significant” evidence of rodent activity. It was among six locations slapped with bans from the FSAI last month for breaches of food safety legislation.

The enforcement orders were issued by environmental health officers in the HSE.

Four closure orders were served to Costa Coffee in Ballina, Anu’s Kitchen in Tallaght, South Dublin, Camile Thai in Bishopstown, Co Cork, and Polish Grocery Janosiki in Dungarvan, Co Waterford.

Prohibition orders were served to LuckyMe Limited in Glasnevin, Dublin, and Janosiki in Waterford.

FSAI chief Dr Pamela Byrne said: “February’s enforcement orders demonstrate the importance of regular and consistent checks by businesses to ensure safe food practices are in place and adhered to in the interest of protecting consumer health.”

All of the above orders have now been lifted except for Polish Grocery Janosiki in Co Waterford.
