Popular city centre cafe forced to close after attacks on staff

A popular Dublin city centre cafe has been forced to close down following a number of attacks on its staff.

It's A Trap on Denmark Street, Dublin 1 announced via social media that due to three recent attacks and one robbery, they will be closing their doors.

Sharing an image on Instagram which seems to depict liquid violently spewed across the cafe's windows and front door, the owners wrote: "The situation doesn’t seems to be getting any better, and for that reason we have decided to announce that we will be closing our shop in 2022. [It] is not going to be an immediate closure.

"In the coming months, we will be looking for a new location to keep running our shop."

They continued: "We are deeply sorry with all our local customers. You made [it] possible we stayed in business throughout the pandemic, and we really appreciate all the support, but our mental and physical health is at risk.

"Today it’s been a really traumatic experience for us, as we were physically attacked, abused and threatened. At this point we really feel hopeless about it."

The owner of the cafe explained to Joe Duffy on Liveline that both he and his wife were attacked yesterday and they are planning to look for a new premises from which they can do business.

Gardaí confirmed to Dublin Live they are investigating a public order incident that occurred at the premise yesterday afternoon.

The cafe's regulars were quick to share their support for owners and staff members with one Instagram user writing: "That area doesn't deserve to have you in it, you deserve so much better than this and I hope you find the perfect place for this amazing cafe."

Another commented: "Such a brilliant cafe and wonderful friendly staff! Hope you find a new location, although it’s awful you should have to in the first place."

It's A Trap became a favourite for locals in the area, serving coffee, hot drinks, sandwiches, wraps and treats. It is also a favourite for pet owners as it is a dog-friendly establishment.
