Popular Cardiff bar announces sudden closure

A popular Cardiff bar has suddenly announced it's set to close.

The Cameo Club in Pontcanna has said it only has a few more days of trading after more than 20 years.

The popular members-only club revealed it is closing on New Year's Eve marking the "end of an era".

On Saturday they also announced that top Welsh chef Tom Simmons will take over the spot and launch a new restaurant in February.

Their second site in Roath will continue to run as normal.

On Twitter they said: "We can confirm that the Cameo Club Pontcanna's last day of business will be New Year's Eve.

"We have agreed to lease the building to the very talented Welsh chef Tom Simmons, who will launch his exciting signature restaurant in mid-February.

"Many thanks to the numerous wonderful customers and staff who've supported the Cameo over the 20 years that we owned the club.

"Hopefully you'll get the chance to enjoy a final few drinks with us up to and including on New Year's Eve.

"Cameo Wellfield Road will continue to operate as normal. Cheers/Iechyd Da."

Chef Tom Simmons currently runs a spot at Tower Bridge in London serving up modern British food with a "Welsh twist".

Originally from Pembrokeshire, the chef runs the restaurant with his partner Lois.

Their menu in London offers Welsh lamb, Pembrokeshire chicken and cawl.

The Cameo in Pontcanna includes a bar, bistro and lounge. They opened their second branch on Roath's popular Wellfield Road in 2015.
