Popular Cajun food firm relocates to make way for major Derby regeneration scheme

A popular Caribbean-inspired food business in Derby is relocating to make way for a major city centre regeneration project.

The Real Big Bellys, which was founded by Josh Desaubin and Mica Barber, has agreed a deal which will see the business move from Duckworth Square to Babington Lane.

Duckworth Square is part of the Becketwell regeneration area, which will see buildings flattened to make way for new homes, commercial and leisure space.

Big Bellys, which is the city’s only business that serves authentic Cajun ‘soul fusion’ cuisine, left its Duckworth Square premises in March and has been searching for a new location throughout the lockdown period.

Josh said: “We’ll do some basic refurbishments at 76 Babington Lane and plan to open our doors to our existing and new customers before autumn hits.”

Emma Purdy, a trainee surveyor at Clowes Developments executed the deal.

She said: “During challenging economic times, Clowes continue to make deals across the county and further afield.

“As a Derbyshire-based business owning a number of commercial units in Derby city centre, it’s great to have secured a new tenant for a previously vacant unit. We hope The Real Big Bellys continue to grow and prosper.”

Darran Severn, from FHP Property Consultants, which marketed the property, said: “I’m pleased this letting to Big Bellys has completed and I look forward to seeing them open soon.

“There’s some positivity in the market and we are currently experiencing good demand for small retail units where rents are below £20,000 per annum.”
