Popular café Emmeline opens second site at Spike Island

One of Bristol's prettiest cafés has opened a second site in the city which is just as easy on the eye.

Emmeline opened on Cheltenham Road in May 2016 and quickly built up a following for its design, wholesome food and first-rate service.

But disaster struck in June 2018 when a BMW ploughed into its shopfront, forcing it to close for almost a year.

After a triumphant reopening in May 2019, owner Shona Graham now has another reason to celebrate after opening a second Emmeline café in Bristol, this time at Spike Island.

"Things have been going really well since we reopened on Cheltenham Road but I was keen to expand the business," she said.

"I wanted to open somewhere south of the river and got in touch with Spike Island to discuss the possibility of opening there.

"To my amazement I then found out they had already earmarked me as a potential new business as they were after a cafe to open next to the gallery, so it all worked out really well.

"We've carried the same feel over from the same café, it's a lovely bright space which we've filled with plants.

"In terms of the food there's things like salad boxes, grilled sandwiches and lots of local produce with a healthy outlook - but also lots of cheese and cakes.

"We're really excited to collaborate with the team at Spike Island to create a relaxing and inviting atmosphere."

The café is well positioned for the hundreds of people who work in Spike Island's creative community and at nearby businesses, as well as those visiting exhibitions staged at the gallery all year round.

Robert Leckie, director at Spike Island, said: "Emmeline is the perfect match for Spike Island: colourful, experimental, welcoming and mindful of environmental issues and sustainability.

"We are proud to have such a delicious and friendly café within our building."
