Popular Bristol venue shuts early before Christmas as Covid cases surge

The rise in Covid-19 infections in Bristol has seen another popular venue shut early for Christmas.

The Gallimaufry on Gloucester Road is usually one of the busiest places in the city at this time of the year but the owner decided to shut the pub and music venue at 6pm on Sunday evening.

James Koch says the reason for closing earlier than planned is a combination of the surge in Covid-19 cases in the city, but also the mixed messages from government.

“It seems the vast majority of people are now ignoring what Boris Johnson has to say and listening to people and scientists with more credibility such as Chris Whitty,” says James.

“The mixed messaging and behaviour of Boris Johnson - for example, not wearing a mask in hospitals - have inevitably rubbed off on others.

“Covid is rife in our business which, despite all the safety measures we implement, is hardly surprising.

“Staff are either ill or extremely nervous about getting ill just prior to Christmas and needing isolate alone over this time.

“Business has been slower than normal though we’ve still needed to cancel many large bookings this coming week.

“The main reason for us shutting is with the safety of our staff and customers in mind, especially at this time.”

James says the kitchen and bar at The Gallimaufry will hopefully re-open on Wednesday, December 29.
