Popular Birmingham jewellery store to close after 31 years in business

A jewellery store is closing down after 31 years in business.

Atkinsons The Jewellers was launched in Sutton Coldfield in 1990 but its owners, husband and wife team Paul and Keeley Atkinson, have decided to shut the shop.

The pair, aged 59 and 54 respectively, are retiring but plan to pursue other business interests and will be having a closing down sale to offload £2 million worth of stock.

Mr Atkinson has worked in the jewellery retail trade since he was a schoolboy and by 19 years of age was the manager of a successful store in Walsall before launching his eponymous business with his wife in July 1990.

The business moved to the Gracechurch Centre in 2018 after a long spell in Birmingham Road and the couple also runs a gold, coin and bullion online business, with many of the shop's staff transferring to this venture.

He said: "We started with £8,000 worth of stock and a huge amount of support from our family.

"I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved, to come from nothing to where we are today has taken an incredible amount of dedication, commitment and hard work and we are delighted that we were able to realise our dream.

"It's been a wonderful 31 years, which we have thoroughly enjoyed, and now the time has come to retire from the retail jewellery trade and pursue other business interests."
