Popular Bertha Park School podcast making waves across the country

A radio project connecting Perth school pupils with the elderly population is making waves across the country.

Pupils at Bertha Park High School teamed up with Generations Working Together to create podcasts aimed at an older audience.

The first podcast was aired at Christmas and pupils have still managed to continue broadcasting even when learning from home.

The podcast Spotlight is presented by four Bertha Park pupils: Ryan Keracher, Daniel Galloway, Mason Simpson and Imogen Ferguson.

The Scottish charity Generations Working Together then share the Bertha Park podcasts with care homes all over Scotland.

Spotlight lets elderly listeners take a trip down memory lane by focusing on a particular year.

The pupils research the year for a show then play four or five songs from that year and read out a selection of newspaper stories.

And Jason Blyth, principal teacher of music at Bertha Park High School, is delighted with how well the project is going.

He told the PA: “It all started just before Christmas when we made a Christmas variety show for people in care homes or on their own.

“Then the schools closed but we kept going with lots of podcasts.”

And not only have the pupils been getting positive feedback from their listeners but they are getting a lot out of it too.

Ryan Keracher said: “We all saw this as an amazing opportunity and I am really grateful to be involved.

“I’d recommend intergenerational projects to everyone. It is really rewarding and we will continue to do all we can as a school to help combat loneliness at what is a really challenging time for many.”

Fellow Spotlight presenter Daniel Galloway said: “It is great to be involved. We are developing lots of skills such as researching, using technology, working remotely and are enjoying listening to music from a decade we are not familiar with.”
