Popular BBC Radio Merseyside presenter dies after long illness as colleagues pay tribute

Tributes have been paid to a former BBC Radio Merseyside presenter following his death after a long illness.

Roger Summerskill had worked for the BBC for three decades and is well-remembered for hosting Radio Merseyside's breakfast programme.

Colleagues hailed him as a 'patient' and 'superb' mentor, following his death on May 3.

Leading tributes to him on social media, former Radio Merseyside friend Billy Butler wrote: "Farewell to a good friend and a big part of Radio Merseyside's heritage my former colleague Roger Summerskill who passed away last night after a long illness.

"Great company to be with and one of the most talented and recognisable news readers ever on local radio.

"Roger and I had a ball doing panto together when he appeared as Abanazer at the Floral Pavilion.

"He said he wouldn't do panto with me again as "I couldn't be trusted " can't think why as I used to trip him up purely by accident!!

"We shared great nights at the Magazine Hotel where Roger did great charity work and who else but Roger would do a wing walk for charity. Only Roger could say Billy Butler and make it sound posh. .Rest in peace my friend."

Liverpool-based journalist Liam Fogarty wrote: "So sad to learn that ex- @bbcmerseyside stalwart Roger Summerskill has died after a long illness.

"More than a great voice, he had superb news sense and was a patient mentor to several generations of local broadcast journalists.

"Above all, a lovely guy. Goodnight, Rog."

And the BBC's political reporter for Merseyside, Claire Hamilton said: "Few people taught me more about being a broadcast journalist than Roger Summerskill.

"How to write for news, what questions to ask, how to add detail to a two-way if you didn’t actually have much to go on.

"He also brought hilarity to our newsroom with his nicknames for each of us (many of which have stuck), his speed at the crossword and his laugh.

"And what a voice - so sad that we won’t hear it again. Rest in Peace Mr Rog, and thank you."
