Popular Ancoats fish and chip restaurant to expand to south Manchester suburbs

A popular Ancoats chippy has set its sights on south Manchester, with a new delivery and takeaway unit in Whalley Range.

The Hip Hop Chip Shop will be taking up residence at the Carlton Club later this week, and donating a portion of its takings to the club.

The Carlton Club said this will 'keep a heartbeat going' at the site, which has been forced to close.

The restaurant has also pledged to donate a meal to a person in need for every order over £25.

The gourmet chippy has parked its giant cassette tape-shaped trailer, designed by artist Stanley Chow, in the grounds ready to launch on Friday February 5.

Delivering its food within a one-mile radius of the Carlton Club, The Hip Hop Chip Shop will also be open for collection.

After five years on the street food scene, including stints at B.Eat Street and Kosmonaut, The Hip Hop Chip Shop opened its first restaurant on Blossom Street in late 2018, quickly earning a glowing review from the M.E.N.

During lockdown, it's been delivering its meals by bike around the city centre.

Dishes on the menu include battered halloumi, battered sausages wrapped in bacon, and a vegan version of a classic fish and chips.

As well as serving their own food, the Carlton Club operation will support other local businesses including Steep Soda, Mama Z, Lush Brownies and Manchester Cheesecake Co.

Carlton Club committee members Donna Bradshaw and Joan Wilson said in a statement shared on Twitter: "The Carlton Club extend a very warm welcome to HHCS.

"As well as providing an exciting new food offer to the community and helping out a small independent business that shares our values, it keeps a heartbeat going at our beloved club whilst we have to be closed - all within covid restrictions.

"The Carlton coffers will be boosted by a donation percentage of revenue - so by buying their food, you are also supporting the club."

Fans have said it's the 'best news in months!'.

Chorlton restaurant Chapati Cafe shared the news, adding: "No brainer - great food , supporting great indie and all the good stuff they do , plus supporting the Carlton Club, a local institution and home to many a fond memory of ours. We will be first in the queue !!"
