Poppy collection box stolen from a butchers shop on Remembrance weekend

Police have shared CCTV of a man they wish to speak to after a Remembrance Day poppy collection box was stolen from a butchers this weekend.

A man went into a butchers shop on Mill Lane in West Derby on Saturday morning (November 7) and took the fundraising pot for the poppy appeal, reports the Liverpool Echo.

Officers investigating the theft have released a CCTV photo of a man they believe could assist them with their enquiries.

The incident happened at 9.30am on Saturday.

Police described the suspect as being a white male with black hair and black framed spectacles on top of his head.

He was wearing a dark-coloured winter coat over a grey-coloured top with a motif on.

The theft came the day before Merseyside and the rest of the UK stopped to commemorate the fallen, with socially distanced and virtual tributes taking places across the country this morning.

The wreath laying ceremony did take place at London's Cenotaph this morning, but it was closed to the public for the first time in a century due to the coronavirus pandemic. Only 150 military personnel were able to attend.

Anyone with information about the theft is asked to contact Merseyside Police on Twitter (via @MerPolCC), or by calling 101.

You can also contact Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111, quoting reference 0487 of Saturday, November 8.
