Poplar crash: Passers-by lift car off 17-year-old cyclist dragged along road in ‘hit-and-run’

Bystanders lifted a car to free a teenage cyclist trapped beneath its wheels following a suspected hit-and-run crash in east London.

Up to 10 passers-by rushed to the aid of the 17-year-old boy who was dragged along the road under a Ford Focus in Poplar.

The driver is said to have fled on foot after smashing into a bollard in Poplar High Street at 7pm yesterday.

Footage shows bystanders rushing towards the still-smoking car before working together to lift the vehicle, allowing the victim to roll clear.

Witness Ken Doyle said: “I saw a young lad on the floor next to a car that had run him over. He was dragged down the road and the car crashed. The driver ran off with a passenger.

“The young lad was screaming underneath the car and people all helped lift the car off him and pull him out. He was really in a bad way.”

Police said the victim’s condition was life-changing. The incident is being treated as suspected grievous bodily harm. No arrests have been made.
