Given the hard-living lifestyle of its star John Belushi, a ringing endorsement of The Blues Brothers from the Catholic church seems somewhat unlikely. But no. L'Osservatore Romano, the official newspaper of the Vatican, has declared the film a "Catholic classic", reports the Daily Telegraph. Apparently Jake and Elwood's travails against police, a psychotic ex-girlfriend, country and western music fans and neo-Nazis are blessed because they are raising money to save a church. Good to know that the Vatican believes that the end justifies the means. There is hope for all of us.
