Pope gets surprise visit from Spider-Man after weekly address in the Vatican

Whenever he addressed the public at the Vatican, Pope Francis will usually attract a wide range of people.

Thousands turned out to listen to the message from the Pontiff - but one particular character drew a lot of attention on Wednesday morning.

Spider-Man.

Among the many in attendance at the San Damaso courtyard was a man dressed in a full, skin-tight, red, black and blue costume of the iconic superhero.

He even had the head cover on.

He sat quietly next to a priest dressed in black who appeared to be completely undisturbed by the presence of a superhero beside him.

However, the whole reason he was there was for a good cause.

The costumed crusader was Mattia Villardita - who was awarded a place in the VIP section of the Pope's address as a result of the work he does dressing up in superhero costumes and visiting sick children in hospital.

The news got better for him when he got the opportunity to meet the Pope afterwards, presenting him with a s Spider-Man mask.
