Pop-up planetarium coming to Notts for 50th anniversary of moon landing

It's one small step for man, one short-ish drive to the pop-up planetarium coming to Nottinghamshire in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the moon landing.

Projections inside the inflatable dome will create a 360-degree intergalactic experience for families as part of a all day space-themed summer show at the award-winning Museum of Timekeeping at Upton Hall.

Taking place on Sunday, June 9, from 10am to 4 pm, the fun day will also include an early navigation and exploration exhibition, a pop-up cafe plus lots of family activites.

Entry is £5 for adults, children go free. There is an additional charge of £2 for children and £3 for adults to visit the pop-up planetarium.

Visitors will also be able to see the first speaking clock, still in working order allowing people to listen to the original ‘Voice’ of Ethel Cain. Ethel beat 9,000 other contestants to take on the role in 1936.

The collection is home to the original 150 year old St Pancras Station clock and a watch used by Captain Scott on his fateful Antarctic journey.

This will be followed by Proms in the Park on Saturday, July 13 where the 12 acre grounds will be open from 4.30pm for people to bring their own chairs and enjoy music from the Newark and Sherwood Concert Band.

There will be two musical sessions commencing at 6pm with favourites Land of Hope and Glory, Sailors Hornpipe, Rule Britannia included in the repertoire. Food will be available on site as will a licensed bar and a cocktail bar.

Museum curator and charity chairman, Viscount Alan Midleton says: "These are just a few of several ambitious undertakings as we embark on our plan to attract many more visitors to enjoy both the hall and our incredible collection.

"We are also improving the layout of some of our halls in order to enhance the experience of individual and group visitors. In this day and age, museums and other attractions need to be more self sustainable and we are determined to achieve that situation."

Tickets can be booked by calling 01636 817601.
