Pop-up container cafes planned for Woden's dining precinct

Woden's Bradley Street has quickly become one of Canberra's go-to dining precincts and now there are plans to expand.

A development application is proposing the installation of two shipping container shops on the footpath next to Westfield Woden shopping centre to be used as cafes.

Since it opened in April 2019 the precinct has proved popular with diners, boasting restaurants such as The Bavarian, Fenway Public House, Sushi Musa and North East.

The application says the takeaway shops, aimed at passers-by, will add vibrancy to the western side of Bradley Street in an area dominated by the blank facades of the shopping centre.

There will be outdoor seating and they will connect "existing ground level shop entrances and restaurants with this modern alfresco dining option", the applications says.

They will be "designed and crafted to a high standard with a selection of materials and colours to enliven the otherwise dull section of Bradley Street".

Shipping containers have proven a popular choice for pop-up dining options in Canberra over the years. Coop at Soho in Dickson is currently doing a roaring trade in the inner north, with Brodburger, Momos and Mr Papa on offer.

Remember the ill-fated Canberra Westside Container Village? It's now, in part, taken residence out at Stromlo Forest Park where Handlebar cafe is doing a roaring trade with cyclists.

Canberra Town Planning lodged the Bradley Precinct DA for Transport Canberra and City Services, and Westfield owners Scentre Group.
