POP goes Gmail

Google "is adding POP, or point of presence, access to Gmail for all users over the next couple of weeks. The move will enable Gmail users to download a copy of their messages through other e-mail programs and devices that support POP," reports The Washington Post.

Comment: More accurately, Google is adding POP3 (Post Office Protocol) e-mail. PoP for "Point of Presence" is a term you don't see much nowadays, but some of us remember when the UK only had a couple of points where you could connect to the Internet, and it was newsworthy when an Internet connection point was opened in a previously unserved city such as Manchester or Birmingham.
