Poor internet connection is huge lockdown problem in many areas because of home-working demand

One-in-four householders in the UK believe their properties have a poor internet connection, according to a study.

The independent survey commissioned by 4G provider National Broadband has found that Greater London is the region that has the worst internet connection in the UK.

Almost a third of Londoners were found to be unhappy with their internet connection, closely followed by the North East and Wales.

Residents of Scotland proved to be the happiest with their broadband with 17 per cent not happy with their connection – specifically those in Glasgow, with only 12 per cent complaining their broadband wasn’t good enough.

With swathes of the UK working from home, watchdog Ofcom states more than 600,000 homes and businesses - or over one million people - across the UK don’t have the minimum 10 Mbps speed recommended for streaming video, Zoom calls or Netflix.

With schools closed, pressure on connections is amplified thanks to children’s computer game use, video streaming and social media activity.

David Hennell, business development director at National Broadband, said: “With the sharply increased demand on home broadband connections - where most of the population is being forced to live more digitally than ever before - a third of the population having internet problems clearly causes major issues.”

Mr David Hennell added: "In lockdown one of the best solutions to these problems is 4G broadband.

"For some time now, from both a price and a performance point of view, this service has been the only viable connectivity solution for locations where fibre-based services either don’t exist or don’t provide adequate speeds."

Fast 4G broadband is almost instantly deployable in most areas.

National Broadband claims it is possible to offer unlimited 4G broadband to around 99 per cent of UK properties, with average download speeds of 25Mbps.

In strong 4G signal areas, customers could get up and running on 4G broadband at home within just 48 hours, with start-up costs of only £99.

In weak signal areas where an external 4G antenna may need to be fitted, the maximum cost of installation for 4G broadband is £399 and will take a week or so to schedule.
