Donald Trump discovered his approval rating had fallen through the floor, so, naturally, he called the floor fake. And he decided to congratulate himself, sitting at the same Oval Office that 63 % of Americans say he’s ruining.
In a recent Truth Social post, Trump lashed out at polling organizations, calling them “radical left media.” He insists that in the “reasonable polls,” he had the “best numbers I have ever had.” The 79-year-old man-child then bragged about ending wars, controlling inflation and taxes, and the “greatest economy.” He soon declared himself triumphant: “Oh, look, I’m sitting in the Oval Office!” Well, sadly, yes.
“So many Fake Polls are being shown by the Radical Left Media, all slanted heavily toward Democrats and Far Left Wingers. In the Fair Polls, and even the Reasonable Polls, I have the Best Numbers I have ever had and, why shouldn’t I?”
But a CNN survey from late October found only 37 % approval and 63 % disapproval, marking one of the lowest ratings of his second term (via The Guardian). Other polls point to a consistent downward spiral, too. Independents are abandoning him. And wide disapproval on economic and immigration issues is taking away what once was considered part of his core base. Even his own party members are turning away from him.
But, of course, Trump reacted with indignation to the news. He instantly labeled all unfavorable polls “fake.” But by denying them, he’s ignoring a growing pile of evidence that he’s incompetent. For months now, metrics have tracked his approval rating slipping well below the 40% threshold that typically signals political trouble.
But, Trump cannot return to the office for a third term constitutionally. So, the polls can only do as much damage to his career. Yet, he couldn’t stop himself from putting out a toddler rant. And this isn’t the first time Trump has dismissed critics or polls. Earlier in April, he used the same tactic and called the media and pollsters of being “negative criminals.” (via NY Post)
He went as far as to claim that they suffer from a made-up “Trump Derangement Syndrome.” Back then, the polls placed him historically low in his first 100 days of the second term. But the truth is, the “radical left media” that he blames for everything is simply measuring public discontent. The inflation, economic anxiety, and a federal shutdown during his presidency would, of course, reflect in his approval ratings.
Yet, he had a different picture to paint in this regard:
“I ended eight Wars, created the Greatest Economy in the History of our Country, kept Prices, Inflation, and Taxes down, and am setting standards for Right Track / Wrong Track for a future U.S.A.”
While we all wish he did all that, that’s simply untrue and inconsistent with real data. As one user on X put it, “I counted eight lies in four sentences. It must be some kind of a record.” Another quipped more succinctly, calling him a “Poor baby.” Trump wrapped up his rant by calling the news fake, evil, and corrupt. But his cute little words aren’t changing anything.
While he sits in the Oval Office celebrating imaginary victories, his approval ratings quietly crash day by day. But we have to give it to him; his disconnect from reality is worth applauding.
