'Pooper snooper' app - New way to report offenders who do not pick up their dog's poo

Treading on dog mess is one of the most annoying things that can happen on a walk.

And until recently, there has been very little you can do to report the offenders - but all that's about to change.

North Somerset Council has launched a new app to help you log the worst areas. Officials will then use information from the 'pooper snooper' to patrol hotspots.

A spokesperson said: "Have you noticed a lot of dog mess in your area? Use the pooper snooper app to report it and help us build an accurate picture of dog fouling in your area.

"We'll use this information to find the worst offending areas and add them to our list of hot spots.

"We're cracking down on dog fouling and issuing fines under Public Space Protection Orders (PSPO) for anyone seen not picking up after their dog or who's unable to produce poo bag when asked to."

Public Space Protection Orders were formerly known as Dog Control Orders (DGOs). In areas where they are enforced, the council must let the public know, for example by putting up a sign saying dogs are not allowed in the park. Where they're in place, the government says you may need to:

  • keep your dog on a lead
  • put your dog on a lead if told to by a police officer, police community support officer or someone from the council
  • stop your dog going to certain places - like farmland or parts of a park
  • limit the number of dogs you have with you (this applies to professional dog walkers too)
  • clear up after your dog
  • carry a poop scoop and disposable bags

Ignoring a PSPO can carry a £100 on-the-spot fine, or a fine of up to £1000 if it goes to court.
