A pony with a medical condition is missing in east London after intruders broke into her enclosure and damaged a stable door.

A "massive" hunt has been launched today and volunteers will search miles of land starting at Hainault Forest and spreading further afield in a bid to find the missing Shetland pony called Jasmine.

Two peafowls and a rabbit are also missing after the break-in.

Police were called to Hainault Forest country park on Monday morning after reports of a burglary. It is not known if the animals were stolen or if they escaped when the enclosure was damaged.

A Met Police spokeswoman confirmed officers are currently investigating the incident.

Redbridge head of parks Kevin Wyatt told the Standard a large search team will be combing the area.

He said: "It's incredibly upsetting for the staff who care for these animals. They have looked after them since they were born.

"We are doing everything we can. We have a large volunteer base and they will be doing walks this morning."

A spokesman for the country park asked the public to share the news "as much as you can" and added: "Jasmine has a medical condition that requires careful management of what she is fed and we are eager to get her back home."

The police spokeswoman said officers were called to the park at 8.23am on Monday.

"Stable doors had been damaged," she said.

"Officers from the East Area Command Unit are investigating."

She added that so far there have been no arrests made.
