Pontypridd’s fire station is set to be refurbished because of its poor condition but it won’t be on the move any time soon.
South Wales Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed it plans to refurbish the station on Oxford Street because of its current poor condition.
It follows the fire cover review that the fire authority did back in 2014.
The fire authority initially considered removing the second fire engine from Pontypridd or closing Porth Fire Station as options under the review in a bid to save money and a consultation was held into the proposals.
It was decided to close Porth station which shut its doors in July 2015 but a plan to find an alternative site for the Pontypridd station was also endorsed at the time.
However, despite extensive investigations to try to find suitable land within the Upper Boat area, no such site has been found.
The current station has a backlog of outstanding building works which are required to maintain suitable health and safety requirements and because there is currently no suitable alternative location the works will have to be carried out so it can keep operating for the next five to 10 years if needed.
It means there will no longer be an active search for a new site but the fire authority will look to move the station if and when a suitable site does become known and available.
