Lido Ponty extends season again and announces Boxing Day swim will go ahead

The National Lido of Wales, Lido Ponty, will see its season extended for another two weeks, Rhondda Cynon Taf (RCT) Council has confirmed.

This means the hugely popular facility will now close on Friday, October 29.

Despite the nights drawing darker earlier, the council has said the Lido has remained popular with residents and visitors.

The facility in Pontypridd has attracted over 92,500 visitors this year – remarkably cementing 2021 as the busiest year since re-opening in 2015 - in spite of the many challenges faced and restrictions that have been required.

As a result it has been confirmed the much-anticipated Boxing Day Swim will return this year, and further details on this will be released in the coming weeks.

Councillor Andrew Morgan, Leader of RCT Council, said: “I am pleased to confirm that the National Lido of Wales, Lido Ponty, will see its doors remain open for a further almost two weeks, with the facility closing for the 2021 season on Friday, October 29 thanks to the dedication of Lido staff.

“In light of the challenges we have faced with the limit on the number of visitors per day, the council has been committed to ensuring that the facility remains open for as long as possible in order to give residents and visitors as much of an opportunity to make use of the Lido as possible.

“Despite this, to have recorded the busiest year since the Lido re-opened in 2015 is a huge achievement and is testament to the appeal of the Lido and cements its position as one of Wales’ best attractions.

“It is also extremely pleasing to confirm that the Boxing Day Swim will return this year, and I am sure that residents will be looking forward to the event.

"The council will provide further information on the arrangements for the Boxing Day Swim over the coming weeks.

“I would also like to personally pay tribute to the staff at the National Lido of Wales, Lido Ponty, for their hard work throughout the 2021 season to keep the venue running and visitors safe and welcomed.”
