Pontus Jansson opens up on his 'caring' and close relationship with Marcelo Bielsa

Leeds United centre-back Pontus Jansson has hailed manager Marcelo Bielsa for how much he cares about his squad as both players and people, describing his impact as tremendous.

The Argentine arrived at the Whites ahead of the 2018/19 campaign and oversaw a significant cultural shift at the club, turning the tide against prior poor seasons.

Though United ultimately fell short at the final few hurdles, missing out on automatic promotion and slipping up in the play-offs, Bielsa's ubiquitous approach and personality has made him a cult hero at Elland Road.

Now, with Bielsa confirmed for another season in charge of the club as they look to push for the Championship title once again, Jansson has revealed United's turnaround in fortunes rests mostly with the 63-year-old's efforts.

"There has been a tremendous development [at the club] and everything is more or less thanks to him," the defender told Aftonbladet.

"I've progressed fantastically under Bielsa and I know how much he cares about me. He's developed me as a player and as a person.

"Sure, it has been tough. There's been many long exercises, but that's what we do, for what he has done with our team has been absolutely fantastic."

Speaking on Bielsa's decision to stay, Jansson added: "For me, I expected he would continue. It felt like he would want to finish his Leeds career in a better way."

The 28-year-old will go away on international duty with Sweden as they prepare for their European Championship qualifiers against Malta and Spain next month.

He will be expected to subsequently link up with United for their pre-season plans, including a trip down under to Australia.
