Pontins holidaymakers find 'thousands of maggots' in rotten kebab left in microwave

A shocked mum has spoken of the horror of waking up to "thousands of maggots" coming from a rotten kebab left in a microwave at a Pontins holiday camp.

The family said they noticed a "funny smell" in the sink area when they arrived at their chalet at Prestatyn Sands last week.

But it wasn't until the next morning that they realised the smell didn't come from the drain as they'd thought - but from a rotting kebab, North Wales Live reports.

The woman, who asked not to be named, claimed even the cleaner was "cringing" when they reported it.

The disgusted parents hurried to clean it all up ahead of their daughter waking up to avoid her holiday being spoiled first thing.

Posting about it on social media, the mum said: "Arrived Friday 6.45pm. Thought room was OK state. Funny smell which I thought was drain as was near sink area.

"Woke up to an invasion in morning as someone before us left kebab in microwave.

"We moved the microwave to find thousands of maggots underneath. Husband cleaned all and removed microwave out of the room."

The post attracted almost 150 comments.

One said: "Wow that is actually vile."

Another added: "How this place is still open I don't know. Thought it was bad enough having a dirty sanitary towel under the sofa bed left by previous guests when we went...along with cleaning sh** off the toilet seat , getting hair out the plug...bathroom ceiling coming through from a leak, to mention a few.

"But people still defend the place as if their life depends on it."

A third person said: "Some people are a bit nit picky but that’s the worse thing ever! How the hell did the cleaners miss that? Rank."

But some spoke out in its defence.

One wrote: "It was an oversight...Everyone makes mistakes. Previous guests should've chucked it anyway."

Another said: "You get what you pay for."

However, one commented: "I went to Pontins all the time when I was little, it was my favourite place ever and I took my daughter once almost six years ago, and luckily we didn't have a dirty chalet but there were a few things I wasn't happy with.

"I've been waiting patiently hoping they get themselves together because I want more than anything my children to have the fun I did, but no way am I taking them while it's like this.

"It's all good and well saying 'they just missed it, but the point is they shouldn't.

"Once every so often, with something minor. Okay, everyone's human. But it's a constant thing it seems. But we're overcoming a pandemic, hygiene is extremely important at the minute, how can they 'miss' something that food is used with when that's something they should definitely be cleaning between guests.

"I have really bad OCD - contamination orientated and if I went here and something like this happened I'd probably end up in hospital through breaking down.

"I honestly have no idea how people can defend it."

One person said: "It's ridiculous, a microwave should be cleaned between guests so should not have been missed. I can't believe the comments: 'it's been missed', 'clean it yourself', 'what do you expect for the price', 'people expect 5*', it's the same stupid comments time and time again to defend the filth.

"A chalet with maggots in is just vile and there is nothing that can be said to excuse it."

The Mirror has contacted Pontins for comment.
