Pontins closes parks amid coronavirus outbreak - uncertainty for staff on zero hours

Pontins staff who were laid off last week due to the coronavirus crisis have been rehired, according to one worker.

Brean Sands in Burnham-on-Sea was one of several parks across the country which went into lockdown on Friday (March 20), leaving employees facing unemployment after their contracts were terminated with immediate effect.

A letter sent to employees, which was seen by Somerset Live, read: "Taking the latest government advice, this letter is to confirm that with effect from Friday 20th March 2020, your employment has been terminated as your services are no longer required."

However, one laid off worker said they have been taken on under the Job Retention Scheme announced by chancellor Rishi Sunak on Friday.

The government last week revealed a wage bailout plan, saying the government would pick up "most of" the wages of workers for the first time in the country's history.

North Wales Live reports a source said all permanent Pontins staff would now receive 80% of their salary from the government but added it is not clear what will happen to zero hour staff.

A worker said: "It's great news because it means people will be able to get by.

"I think the pressure put on them was enough for them to change how the staff are treated.

"But I hope the zero hour staff will get a reasonable amount and not 80% of nothing, we will have to see how it works for them."

Britannia - which owns the Pontins group - has been contacted for comment.

Pontins statement

Revealing the closures of all of its parks last week, a spokesman for Pontins said: "Pontins would like to reassure you there has been no outbreak of coronavirus on our parks, however we have taken the latest government advice and decided to close all parks effective Friday.

"We will be contacting all guests who have a Pontins booking between now and the end of April, via email in the next two days.

"If you have a holiday booked from May 1 to the end of the year we will be contacting you in the next seven days.

"You will appreciate how busy our phone lines are and so may we please ask for your patience whilst everyone is responded to.

"Obviously our first priority is to respond to guests scheduled to arrive in the next seven days."
