Ponteland wedding fair drunk drove home on WRONG side of the road - then fell out her VW Polo

A drink driver got so drunk at a wedding fair she "fell out the car" when police pulled her over - after driving down the WRONG side of the road.

Tipsy Anne White did a u-turn over her plans to stay sober at the event - but still drove home.

But on the way back in the pitch black, police breathalysed her after having to swerve to avoid White's VW golf as it came towards them head-on.

"When asked whether she had drunk anything she said 'I've had a few drinks," said her solicitor Jonathan Cousins.

"Later on she said 'I'm ashamed of myself - I've had more than a couple'."

In fact, the 30-year-old drank so much she was almost three times the legal limit when stopped in North Road.

The then-recruitment consultant was arrested and subsequently lost her job.

However, she's set to start a new job next week, South East Northumberland Magistrates' Court heard.

And the two-man bench downgraded her punishment after hearing she needed to drive due to her "caring responsibility" for her parents.

Facing a possible community order, White was instead fined £600 after admitting driving with excess alcohol.

White, of Berwick Hill Cottages, Ponteland, Northumberland, was also banned for driving for two years.

The April 14 offence was White's first conviction, one her solicitor claimed she was "extremely ashamed" of.

Thursday's sentencing heard she drove over two miles in what Mr Cousins claimed was an "extremely foolish and stupid decision".

"This incident was extremely out of character," he claimed, mitigating.

He also passed letters from references and her GP to the bench, claiming the incident occurred during a particularly turbulent time in her life.

She must also pay a £60 charge and £85 costs.
