Ponteland running squad celebrates after becoming league champions

The members of a running squad in Northumberland are celebrating after clinching the title of league champions.

Ponteland Runners women's team became champions of division 3 at the North East Harrier League 2021-22. The team took the spoils at the final fixture at Alnwick Castle, beating second-placed Low Fell by four points.

It's a world away from where they were after the team grew in numbers over the last five years. They went from barely getting a full team out to win the league as convincing champions in March this year.

The North East Harrier League is a series of six cross-country running events. Each one is four miles long, with runners competing in all weathers throughout the autumn, winter, and spring.

After a few years of being close to glory – including a pandemic year meaning the team narrowly missed promotion by one point – the team finally clinched the title.

The team is really looking forward to taking on division 2 during the 2022-23 season which will start in September this year. If you’d like to be part of the team, get in touch with Ponteland Runners who would love to have you join them. You can find out more here.
