Pongsakorn strikes it rich at Jakarta 2018

Wheelchair racer Pongsakorn Paeyo on his way to winning gold in the men's 200m T53 in Jakarta yesterday.

Wheelchair racer Pongsakorn Paeyo won his fourth gold medal of the 2018 Asian Para Games in Jakarta yesterday.

In the men's 200m wheelchair racing T53, the Thai crossed the finish line in 27.59 seconds to win the gold medal ahead of compatriot Pichet Krungket, who came in second in 28.07sec.

Pongsakorn will become rich when he returns home since he is entitled to get four million baht as bonus from the government.

Under the National Sports Development Fund's bonus scheme for the Asian Para Games, a gold medal is worth one million baht, a silver 500,000 baht and a bronze 300,000 baht.

Shooter Anuson Chaichamnan won the R3 mixed 10m air rifle prone competition to give his country their second gold medal in the sport.

Anuson scored 253.8 points to better the meet record. He outperformed three South Korean rivals en route to the gold medal.

South Korean Lee Ji-Seok won the silver with a score of 252.7 points, followed by compatriot Jeon Young-Jun who scored 230.4 points for the bronze.

"I am very happy that I finally won my first Asian Para Games gold medal after getting silver medals," Anusorn said.

In boccia, Thailand beat Hong Kong 14-3 in the final of the team BC1-2.

At press time last night, Thailand were seventh in the medal standings with 23 gold medals, behind China (157), South Korea (50), Iran (49), Japan (43), Uzbekistan (35) and Indonesia (30).

Thailand aim to finish sixth overall and be the best among the Southeast Asian nations.

However, with only one day remaining, they are unlikely to reach the goal.

Meanwhile, table tennis player Rungroj Thainiyom is one of the Thai athletes who will become wealthy after winning two gold medals.

"I am very happy because I won two gold medals. This means that I will get a two-million-baht bonus from the Thai government after the Games," Rungroj said.
